what is the what ch 1

i was able to stop by the bookstore on my way back from fuqua today and picked up class of 2012's summer reading book to read through. only read the first chapter. i think i am at a point in my life where i am very critical (judgmental some would call it); so what is the what strikes me as too pushy too soon. i think before you develop sympathy for the character, you are rushing headlong into his experiences of sudanese genocide. too shock/awe. and the point is, humanity is such that we're expected to be outraged. we should be outraged. right, that's what i'm saying. i think.

anyway, it got me thinking about evil...so we generally are shocked by these ideological crimes that people commit because they are so extreme and they don't necessarily take into account the realities of the person that you're harming. however, petty crimes, well they're just evil that occur out of what...greed and laziness? and still, you're hurting someone. so then, if you think about it like that...doesn't it seem that these latter crimes, the ones that happen everyday around us...aren't they so much worse?

hmm i really like it in the bookstore. i think this summer i might just disappear off into my own on saturday's to do some reading.
